Our Global Heritage
Our identity is defined by a deep history of service that spans continents and centuries. The Daughters of Charity was originally founded in Paris, France, in 1633 by St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac. Their vision was to create a community of sisters dedicated entirely to the service of the poor, a legacy that we continue to uphold today.
Our Presence in Ethiopia
In the Ethiopian context, our presence is long-standing and deeply entrenched in the local community. The Daughters of Charity was founded in Ethiopia in 1927, bringing nearly a century of experience to the country. This marked the beginning of our commitment to serving the people of Ethiopia with the same dedication and compassion that has characterized our work globally.
Our Mission in Tigray
Recognizing the specific needs of the northern regions, we expanded our mission to Tigray in 1973. For over 50 years in Tigray, we have served as a critical support system for the people. We are not just an NGO; we are a faith-based community of "Daughters" committed to living out our faith through action.
We operate as the Daughters of Charity (DoC) - Tigray Region Coordinating Office, serving as a central hub for social, development, and humanitarian interventions across the region. Our work is grounded in the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, which calls us to serve the most vulnerable with dignity, respect, and love.
Legal Recognition
We are legally recognized and operate under the Ethiopian Catholic Church – Social and Development Commission (ECC-SDCO), specifically within the ECC-SDCO Adigrat Branch. Our registration number is 0756, which formalizes our status as a recognized development and humanitarian organization in Ethiopia.
This legal framework ensures that our operations are transparent, accountable, and aligned with both national regulations and international best practices in humanitarian and development work.

Our Vision
"To be a sign of God's love to the poor, fostering a world where dignity and justice prevail."
While our roots are in immediate mercy, our vision encompasses the long-term growth of the communities we serve. We strive to provide holistic services that promote the "Integral Development of the people of God". We believe that true development must address every aspect of the human experience, empowering individuals to move from vulnerability to stability and dignity.
Our vision calls us to look beyond simple charity. We aim to serve the person as a whole—addressing their physical needs while also tending to their spiritual well-being. Whether providing food to the hungry or counseling to trauma survivors, we see our work as a direct service to God through his people.
We envision communities where every person, regardless of their circumstances, can live with dignity, access quality education and healthcare, and participate fully in the social and economic life of their community.
Core Values
Our work is anchored in the unshakeable principles of our faith. We are guided strictly by Gospel values and the Social Teaching of the Catholic Church. These teachings inform how …
Human Dignity
We believe that every person, regardless of their status, possesses inherent worth. We treat every beneficiary with the utmost respect, ensuring our aid empowers rather than diminishes them. This value guides all our interactions and program designs.
Compassion
We do not just observe suffering; we enter into it. We are called to suffer with those who suffer, providing a presence of comfort and understanding in difficult times. Our compassion is not pity, but a deep recognition of shared humanity.
Love
Our service is not a transaction; it is an act of love. We serve with a heart of charity, driven by a genuine love for the people we assist. This love motivates us to go beyond the minimum, to seek excellence, and to remain committed even in the face of challenges.
